Dana White, the UFC president, has announced that Conor McGregor’s next fight will be against champion Tony Ferguson, the newly minted interim lightweight. In the main event of UFC 216, Ferguson succeeded in winning a tough fight against Kevin Lee. McGregor achieved a submission in the third round of this fight.
McGregor, although a well-known UFC fighter, was really put on the map when he entered the boxing ring with Floyd Mayweather in August. For an amateur boxer, the Irishman managed to last until the 10th round against the undefeated champion to which a Technical Knockout (TKO) was called, resulting in a loss for McGregor.
The last time McGregor claimed a mixed martial arts win was against Eddie Alvarez. This win was made in the UFC 205, in November of last year to which he took home the lightweight belt. Before this, the 29 year old was both successful and defeated in two separate fights against Nate Diaz. The fights went down in UFC history as the most watched.
Future Fight Plans for McGregor
Although rumours of a third fight with Diaz is on the cards, White insists that the Irishman should go up against Ferguson next. According to White, pairing the two up to face off against one another only makes sense. Reason being is that both fighters are champions, and should be something that UFC fans would want to see. White further claims, that it is impossible for this fight not to be a great one.
White confesses that although he hasn’t had contact with the Irish fighter since the Mayweather boxing match, he’s sure that McGregor will be interested as he is always keen to fight.
