Aristocrat has a giant back catalogue of pokies, and Indian Dreaming was among the first live video slots they released. This game was introduced in 1999. It features a Native American theme, with dreamcatchers, tepees, and buffalo on the reels. You can now enjoy Indian Dreaming pokies online as well as in brick-and-mortar casinos. In addition to the solid original version, an updated game called Jackpot Catcher has been produced. Indian Dreaming is also available in Aristocrat multi-game pokies, for example on selected Wonder 4 Tall Fortunes games.

After more than 20 years, the gameplay of Indian Dreaming is still solid and enjoyable. The key to getting big wins is the tepee wilds. During the free spins bonus, wilds on reels 2 and 4 get 3x and 5x multipliers, respectively. If you get a big line hit with both wild multipliers in place, your win gets an incredible 15x boost.

Indian Dreaming was an early example of online pokies with the ‘Reel-Ways’ winning system. This creates 243 winning combinations from the leftover standard five-reel by three-row setup. To win, line up the Native American symbols on consecutive reels from the left. You get paid for three or more when there are no full-reel gaps. Note that classic win-line versions are available in brick-and-mortar casinos.
Bets at Indian Dreaming are in fixed units of 20¢. This covers all 243 winning combinations. The maximum bet varies by casino, with $20 or more per spin available. Standard options include auto-play and the ability to play with or without the bleeping sound effects.
For the Tall Fortunes multi-game, you will be playing Indian Dreaming with up to 3 other slots at the same time. Here, your total bet will depend on the mix of games and betting unit. In addition to the regular free spins bonus, a ‘Super Free Games’ feature can give you multiple sets of reels to spin on.
Indian Dreaming has an extremely high Return to Player percentage. This is listed at 98.99%, which is comparable to video poker. This pokie beats Big Red, often cited as an example of a high-RTP game.
The 243-ways winning system helps keep volatility down. Indian Dreaming has medium volatility. Your biggest wins will come when you hit one or both multiplier wild symbols during the free games bonus.
Any concerns about the dated graphics and sound effects will disappear when you get the Indian Dreaming free spins bonus. This is triggered by dreamcatcher symbols. Three of them get you 15 free spins, four award 20, and five get you the maximum 25 free spins. That’s in addition to a big scatter prize.
After hitting start, your free spins will play through quickly. There is a major boost to your chances of winning, with tepee wild symbols now featuring multipliers.
The wild on reel three in Indian Dreaming has a 3x multiplier, and the one on reel 4 has a 5x multiplier. They apply to any win that these wild symbols help to create. Big windfalls will come on those spins where both appear. They work together, giving you 15x on any win. With both wilds in play, those wins will be at least four of a kind. If you are familiar with Aristocrat slots, the coin show and tune which follows is easy to recognise.
If you have ever played Timber Wolf from Aristocrat, you will see the same 3x and 5x wilds in use. The difference is that those wilds stay for a respin if they are not involved in a win the first time.
The Indian Dreaming pokie is set at a time before the New World was discovered. It shows classic symbols associated with the native population of North America. The design around the reels is minimal. You will see a patterned line, and the ‘243 ways’ sign drawn in a distinctive font.
Big wins in Indian Dreaming come when you line up the Chief. This symbol shows an elder in a distinctive headdress. It is worth 2,500 coins for five of a kind. Other high-paying symbols include an axe, a buffalo, a totem pole, and a tepee. The tepee symbols are wild, though during the base game they do not feature win multipliers.
In addition to triggering free spins, dreamcatcher symbols also offer scatter prizes. Five of them will give you 50x your total bet. They do appear during free spins, making retriggers possible.
Brightly coloured letters and numbers representing playing cards complete the winning symbols.
The online version of Indian Dreaming at mobile casinos will work on mobile devices, though we recommend testing it in free play mode to make sure it works on your specific device. This game was produced long before iPhones or Android smartphones were invented. It has been adapted for online play using responsive browser technology. A positive is that the plain, clear symbols and minimal animations make the action easy to follow on a small screen.
We were not able to find the original Indian Dreaming pokies in demo mode for free play. There is an enhanced version called ‘Indian Dreaming: Emerald Edition’ at the free-to-play smartphone app Heart of Vegas. There is also an updated variation of Indian Dreaming called ‘Jackpot Catcher.’ This is available at leading real money online casinos to play in demo mode.
Here are the benefits and disadvantages of the Indian Dreaming pokie game:
Retro slot gaming from the top-rated Aristocrat
All-ways system giving you 243 winning combinations
Dream catcher symbols trigger up to 25 free spins
3x and 5x Tepee wilds during the free spins
Get a win with both wilds to get 15x on your win
Old graphics, sounds and animations
No progressive jackpot
There are more reasons to enjoy Indian Dreaming than a simple trip down memory lane. This game may look older, though the gameplay is just as enjoyable as when it was introduced in 1999. With Native American symbols, the dreamcatcher is a clever choice to trigger the free spins bonus. During this feature, wins can be multiplied by up to 15x – more than making up for the lack of a progressive jackpot.
